“I was invited by Lolux to see them perform. I had no idea what to expect or what I was gonna see and hear. But when I say that I was completely blown away by the songs and stage presence. I was in fact with my jaw on the floor and sweating from dancing. Lolux has completely blown me away with their incredible performance. Their mix of old school alt rock with psychedelic sounds was a mix I never really heard before but it works, amazingly. The music was phenomenal, and the stage presence was equally amazing, they so amazingly comfortable and knew exactly how to draw you in. Honestly I would rate it a solid 10/10 performance. And would love to see them live again. Thank you Lolux for inviting Rock Scene Magazine. I can’t wait to see you all again.”

INTERVIEW WITH LOLUX

“How did Lolux form as a band?”

Alex – “I met Luke while busking in Astoria park. He joined the band I was in at the time to play bass and we eventually split off to form Lolux. I met our guitarist Evren at the Thursday Jam at the Local Bar in Astoria and he joined soon after. I met our drummer Brian at the Local as well and he joined last summer. I’m also a bartender at the Local. It’s a key place in Lolux lore.”

Brian – “I put down a transmutation circle and summoned them”

“What was Lolux’s most interesting show?”

Alex – “I like Hart Bar in Bushwick. We played with Mango Safari (who we just reconnected with in Philly) and Snowmen were just awesome. It was clear even then that they were on to something special. During the show, I also found out that my mom was in a bad car crash and I had to fly home to Minnesota the next day. It was an interesting night to say the least. She’s doing well now. A couple months later, we filled in for another band and played hart bar again on a Tuesday night at 10 pm. There was no one there. Not kidding. Even the sound person left.”

Brian – “It would eaaasily have to be our Halloween show. We played as the teletubbies (I was the best teletubbie, if you know you know) in a hot ass venue, and I had been running around like crazy to get makeup and color contacts for a crazy clown look on top of all that. Plus all the other bands that played were absolutely great. Exit 18, Misuser, and Plight, do yourself a favor and check em out!”

Evren – “One of our Shillelagh’s gig I think. I was having one of the worst days in my life, but I was up for the gig. Struggle was still there. However, the audience was so f*cking awesome and they took Alex up for crowd surfing for the first time. All I remember was looking at that and smiling. It was so cool to have something like that as a band.”

Luke – “Our first Mercury lounge gig for sure. There was a wedding proposal, lots of bubbles, and the whole Lolux community showed up to support us. It was beautiful.”

“How does Lolux go about writing music?”

Alex – “I wrote most of our ep up until Never Lover – Never Lover was the first song we all wrote as one. And it was over a song we came up with in a 3 minute jam before working on other songs. It was awesome.”

Evren – “Either we come up with a riff and finish the song based on that or someone brings their old stuff and we LoLuxify it. Yes, that’s a new word in English. Turning everything to a LoLux friendly content.”

Luke – “We write really well together. Usually someone comes in with an idea and we take our time and see where it leads. Often times, we’ll be jamming on a riff and Alex breaks out his notebook and start writing on the spot. Other times, he’ll go through his notes and see if what he’s hearing matches with anything he’s previously written. As the song is developing, we talk through the structure and adding new parts. It’s a pretty democratic process with surprisingly little arguing.”

“What is one location Lolux wishes to perform?”

Evren – “Istanbul”

Luke – “The Warsaw or Bowery Ballroom”

Brian – “Honestly it comes down to the venues that influenced me the most when it comes inspiring me to really pursuing live music and performances, and where I’ve seen some of my favorite bands perform. Market Hotel, Irving Plaza, Terminal 5, Brooklyn Steel, Bowery Ballroom, honestly the list is too long to write but you get the idea.”

Alex – “TV Eye or Trans Pecos”

“Outside of music what else has left a mark on Lolux’s sound?”

Luke – “Astoria is near and dear to all of our hearts and has influenced our sound in so many ways. It’s the place where we all met and spend most of our time. NYC is a hard place for working people to live and make art, so we feel fortunate for the community we are a part of. Without Astoria, there is no Lolux.”

“What is one of Lolux’s favorite tracks to perform?”

Evren – “I love our medley a lot. Headspin to Beautiful monster is a crazy energy shift from a pop rock song to a hard rock. It’s like climbing a mountain and finish at the top.”

Luke – “The new stuff has been really fun to play. It’s still in the process of becoming and it’s nice to see how people react as we play things they’ve never heard before. Keep your ears open for our first full length release called “Ceiling Dreams.” The first single should be out soon and the full release will be out in the fall.”

Brian – “I’m with Luke on this one Ceiling Dreams is one of my favorites, right after is Hungry Ones. Ceiling Dreams has that almost psych rock dreamy vibe (pun intended), and Hungry Ones is an almost western chugger with my favorite drum fill at the end of Evren’s guitar solo.”

“Where did the band Lolux originate?”

Alex – “Queens, baby. The world’s “best” borough”

“What was the process of producing the song ‘Never, Lover’ by Lolux?”

Brian – “I just finished a court case fighting for custody over my 13 year old son, and the angst and anger from the situation was felt through the rest of the band and we all came together and wrote an amazing track”

Evren – “It’s funny that we came up with the riff at the rehearsal the song was almost done and one day Alex set up a meeting with our previous producer Oliver Strauss. We thought we were gonna hang out only. Yet we end up recording the song.”

Luke – “Oh man, that session was a disaster for me. My wife and I had just had a baby. Alex told me he was going to a studio to check it out and talk to the producer. He called me an hour later and said there had been a miscommunication and he had actually BOOKED a session. I was mid diaper change when I got the call that we all needed to show up ASAP to record a song that was unfinished and we had practice maybe once or twice before! The session was a struggle and was the first time we were actually writing in the studio. But it turned out great, so all’s well that ends well! It was the first collaborative Lolux recording so it’ll always have a special place in our hearts. I am happy to report the process has gotten much smoother since then.”

Alex – “It wasn’t a struggle for me. I had fun.”

“What keeps Lolux motivated as a band?”

Evren – “I gotta say our personalities. We are loyal to each other and protecting the band from our personalities.”

Luke – “We believe in each other, what we are doing, and what we can accomplish if we stay to ourselves in each other.”

“What are Lolux’s upcoming shows? Where will they be?”

“As we write this, we are in the van on our first mini tour. We played Philly last night, Baltimore tonight and then move on to Asbury Park and back to NYC. After that we’ll be back up in Hudson valley at Snug Harbor on May 15th. No doubt there will be some NYC show in between and we hope to get back on the road for a few dates this summer.”

“We got elements of metal, soul, punk and even a little pop. Our dynamics shift and bend to the whims of the song we want to create, really. We’re inspired by the screaming soul of The White Stripes, Jett and Chris Cornell, with a touch of operatic elements from Muse and The Killers. Then we add a dash of creamy softness with turns towards Radiohead, Frank Ocean and Jeff Buckley,” Coe said.

Fans can commonly find Lolux performing at local bars and venues such as Shillelagh Tavern, The Local, Mad Donkey and Alewife Brewing.

“[The Astoria music community] is entirely welcoming, warm and diverse. This community will support you. I got my start in Queens at an Astoria Music Collective Open Mic at the backend of the pandemic and now know so many people that share my same passions,” Coe said.

NYC's Lolux glimpse into a bike mechanic's mind on their new single 'Lost/Piece'. Encapsulating the feeling of rushing through life, parts rattling, and maybe being lost along the way but determined not to stop for anything in their path.

Going from work to a show, to a lover possibly dicing with death along the route. It's a track that perfectly encompasses the live-fast attitude of bikers. The wind flowing all around, the high-octane adrenaline rush, and the buzz of free-spirited excitement.

'Lost/Piece' is a shining ray of blinding anthemic indie rock. Catchy and confident, its jangly uptempo vibe and bold crashing chorus impresses. Glamorous and energetic, it's bursting with infectious hooks and gripping riffs as the drums thunder like pounding rain.

It rages and shines; it swoops and soars throughout its captivating groove and grand, arena-filling qualities. The vocals are beautifully clear, with just a hint of arthouse theatrics. Lolux are passionate musicians conveying their stories in a engulfing, compelling form.
